Turlock Water Polo
Turlock Water Polo
The Turlock Water Polo was started by Coach Feaver in the summer of 1974 after the inaugural 1973 season at Turlock High School. Since then Turlock has grown to be a town rich in aquatic history. Many very successful people have swam in Turlock and thrown the ball around in the old Turlock pool.
Water polo builds character and teaches athletes how to work as a team while learning something about them in the process. Team sports such as water polo instill traits of dependability, mental toughness, discipline and a willingness to mature.
Legendary University of California coach, Pete Cutino had the following to say about competing in water polo:
“Youth only comes once in a lifetime. The opportunity to compete in sports is short-lived, and to compete at this level is truly extraordinary. So it is important to pause and reflect on the values and the principles inherent in what you do. These principles can, depending on you, guide your future.
You must have a clear, vivid, and precise picture of where you want to go and what you want to be.
You must be willing to change, willing to grow, willing to improve.
Training for excellence is hard and physical…demanding work and time.
To compete in sports is to eliminate the comfort zone.
You must have mental toughness and discipline.
You must be motivated.
There are different kinds of motivation.
In sport, you must develop an inward motivation to succeed.
You pay a price to get there.
You pay a price to stay there.
If you are a champion, you become the standard, the target, and that is as it should be – in order for you
to constantly develop towards excellence.
Winning is a worthy goal.
However, do not trade long-term values like character and dignity for temporary bravado and the in-
your-face mentality.
The question arises:
Do sports build character?
I contend they reveal it.”
